Does Controsand Bora raise water hardness?

UNS notes on the packaging that four Controsand shades (Maui, Mojave, Santa Fe and Tahoe) slightly raise GH. Bora is not on that list, which makes it, along with Kona, the natural choice for soft-water shrimp and fish. As with any new substrate, test GH after the first week.

Extra-Fine 0.4–0.9 mm Grain

The finest grade in the Controsand range settles into a smooth, even bed that is ideal for foregrounds and top layers, and gentle on bottom-dwelling fish and shrimp that sift through sand.

UNS Controsand Bora Extra-Fine Sand: frequently asked questions

What grain size and colour is UNS Controsand Bora?

Bora is an extra-fine sand with a grain size of about 0.4–0.9 mm, in a mixture of lighter beige tones. It is the lightest shade in the Controsand range.

How much Controsand Bora do I need?

UNS recommends a 3 litre bag for an aquarium of about 35 litres, such as the UNS 45U, and an 8 litre bag for an aquarium of about 75 litres, such as the UNS 60U. A foreground path or beach needs far less than a full bed.

Can I use Bora together with UNS Controsoil?

Yes. UNS recommends using Controsand with Controsoil: plant into the soil behind the hardscape and use Bora for the open foreground and paths. Keep the two apart with stones so the dark soil does not spill onto the light sand.

Is UNS Controsand Bora available in South Africa?

Yes. Jungle Aquatics stocks UNS Controsand Bora in 3 litre and 8 litre bags in South Africa. Check live stock and pricing on jungleaquatics.com, then collect from the Broadacres showroom in Fourways, Johannesburg.
