UNS Controsand Kona Pebble Gravel

Pebble Gravel 3–5 mmDeep Charcoal Tones100% Natural

UNS Controsand Kona is a rounded pebble gravel, about 3–5 mm, designed for freshwater aquarium use. Its deeper charcoal tones work as a supporting feature or to create excellent contrast against lighter sands and bright plants. Like the other Controsands, Kona can be used alone or mixed with other substrates for a custom look in planted tanks, terrariums and paludariums, and it is safe for fish, invertebrates and reptiles.

Is Controsand Kona a sand or a gravel?

Kona is a rounded pebble gravel of about 3–5 mm, not a fine sand. Use it as a foreground accent, around the base of hardscape, or mixed into an extra-fine sand such as Bora for a natural riverbed. For a smooth sandy bed, choose Bora, Maui or Mojave (0.4–0.9 mm) instead.

Rounded 3–5 mm Pebbles

Kona is the “Normal” grade of Controsand: a smooth, rounded accent gravel rather than a fine sand, which stays put on slopes and around the base of stones.

UNS Controsand Kona Pebble Gravel: frequently asked questions

What grain size and colour is UNS Controsand Kona?

Kona is a rounded pebble gravel with a grain size of about 3–5 mm, in deep charcoal and dark grey tones. It is the darkest shade in the Controsand range.

Does Controsand Kona raise water hardness?

UNS lists Maui, Mojave, Santa Fe and Tahoe on the packaging as the Controsand shades that slightly raise GH. Kona is not on that list, so with Bora it is the usual choice for soft-water tanks. Test GH after the first week, as with any new substrate.

How much Controsand Kona do I need?

UNS recommends a 3 litre bag for an aquarium of about 35 litres, such as the UNS 45U, and an 8 litre bag for about 75 litres, such as the UNS 60U. As an accent around stones, one 3 litre bag goes a long way.

Is UNS Controsand Kona available in South Africa?

Yes. Jungle Aquatics stocks UNS Controsand Kona in 3 litre and 8 litre bags in South Africa. Check live stock and pricing on jungleaquatics.com, then collect from the Broadacres showroom in Fourways, Johannesburg.
