UNS Controsand Maui is a fine-grain natural sand, about 0.4–0.9 mm, in a cool-toned grey palette. It works especially well paired with natural stone, where it provides subtle contrast rather than a bright highlight. Maui is easy to use: rinse it gently to remove the finer grains, then spread it evenly. It is suited to shrimp and other bottom-dwellers that sift through sand. Note that UNS lists Maui among the shades that slightly raise GH.

Does Controsand Maui change water chemistry?

Slightly. UNS states that Maui may alter water chemistry by raising hardness, and lists it on the packaging with Mojave, Santa Fe and Tahoe as shades that slightly raise GH. That is fine for most community fish and plants. For soft-water Caridina shrimp, choose Bora or Kona instead.
